Chemistry 3.1

Practical Investigations at UC

The University of Canterbury's Department of Chemistry makes the laboratories available to New Zealand schools for students to undertake their Chemistry 3.1 Investigations. The University will provide staff and graduate students to assist your students, and the glassware, equipment and most of the chemicals that you will need. Solutions of chemicals can be provided as long as the dilutions and quantities are requested five working days in adavnce.

We prefer students to do assessments which have been trialled and proved, linked below. A student may be permitted to take on an alternative investigation, but the written protocol must be submitted three full weeks in advance, for safety reasons.

In 2013 the dates when the labs are available are:

  • 3-19 April
  • 4 June to 12 July
  • 19-30 August
  • 14 25 October
Please contact Science Outreach if you are interested in booking a time or would like more information, at (03) 364 2178 or email outreach@canterbury.ac.nz

Practical Investigations for Chemistry 3.1

In collaboration with the Canterbury Science Teachers' Association, Outreach developed a number of practical chemistry investigations intended for use by students carrying out the NCEA Chemistry 3.1: Extended practical investigation into variations in the amount of a substance.

Please note that though we are pleased to answer questions from these NZ students, we are unable to answer queries from researchers overseas.
